How does the Wise Ones care model benefit the patient?

In so many ways! Because your care is divested from the limits set by the insurance company, you can receive care that is truly tailored to YOU:

  • The patient’s individual needs, resources, goals, values, life situations, etc. dictate the plan of care- NOT the insurer’s bottom line.

  • More freedom for one-on-one, hour-long care sessions that address the whole body system, not just the one body part for which the insurer will authorize treatment.

  • Patients never have to worry about insurance denials or being “cut off” from therapy before they feel ready. Chronic conditions require long-term maintenance and can’t be “fixed”. And that’s okay.

  • The cost of therapy is transparent. There is no risk to the patient of a surprise bill down the road. All costs are clearly stated and collected up front. Patients can use this information to make value-based judgments on how to allocate their personal finances.

  • Transparent costs and a patient-centered care model can potentially save costs overall. Longer, more productive sessions and a collaborative treatment approach may lead to fewer visits overall. I can focus on YOU when I’m not fighting with your insurer, and that means better quality time with you.

Why doesn't Wise Ones Physio take insurance?

To put it bluntly, insurance just doesn’t cut it anymore. Not for me as a therapist and definitely not for my patients. The visit limits, the surprise bills, the burdensome authorizations… the reasons are endless. Healthcare is becoming more about appeasing insurers than it is about serving our patients.

Additionally, financial transparency is all but impossible when dealing with insurance. There is virtually no way to tell a patient up front what their care will cost them in the long run. This makes it impossible for the patient to make informed cost/benefit decisions when charting out their course of care. In today’s economy, none of us can afford a surprise bill down the road, and this is always a possibility when using insurance to pay for physical therapy.

I want my patients to make informed choices about their care on every level, including the financial resources they dedicate to physical therapy. Cash-based physical therapy might seem more costly upfront but allows for higher quality care and the potential for fewer visits. When chronic conditions are managed effectively with a whole-person approach, there is the possibility for decreased healthcare utilization in the long term.

The Wise Ones care model is patient-centered, not insurance centered. Working outside of the insurance system allows me to provide care that is ethical, empowered, collaborative, transparent, and of the highest quality. This is a care model that I can truly stand behind.

Do I need a referral for physical therapy?

In New Mexico, Direct Access to physical therapy is the law; this means you may see a physical therapist without a doctor's referral. However, your doctor is welcome to send a referral. I have a history of managing medically complex patients in Taos, Colfax, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, and even Bernalillo counties. I have great relationships with a wide network of care providers. I will happily send and accept notes and will collaborate in any way necessary to care for YOU.
